Teacher Education Institutions have a vital role in improving the standards of the system of education by preparing competent and effective teachers. It has generally been agreed that the quality of a nation is judged by the quality of its citizens which is determined by the nations educational system and which in turn is decided by the quality of teachers it has. As remarked by Dr. D.S. Kothari, a sound program of professional education of teachers is essential for the quality improvement of education. 

National College for Teacher Education was crystallized in form and substance in the year 2005. The college is located at Meprathupady, a beautiful suburb in the Taluk of Kunnathunad on the Perumbavoor - Kolenchery road. The college is seven kilometers away from Perumbavoor Town and is within easy reach, as a number of KURTC and private buses regularly ply the route. The college also provides hostel facility. The nearest railway station is at Alwaye, which is only twenty five kilometers from the college.

The college is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, approved by NCTE, Recognized by UGC & Accredited by NAAC, has the enviable reputation of being one of the premier institutions in Ernakulam District. 

At present the total intake for B.Ed and M.Ed is 50. In conformity with the policy of the Government of Kerala, 50% of the seats are reserved for the merit quota and the remaining 50% are earmarked for the candidates under management quota.
